Garden Dahlias vs. Cut Flower Dahlias
Here at Three Acre Farm, our dahlias are divided into two separate fields.
We group our Garden Dahlias in one field and our Cut Flower Dahlias in another. We harvest from the Cut Flower Dahlia field, while allowing the Garden Dahlia field to abound in blooms (note: we deadhead the Garden Dahlias every 10 days to keep the plants blooming).
A quick note before we dive in: Any dahlia can be cut and put in a vase. These categories aren't rules... they're guidelines. We created them to help us (and you!) think more intentionally about how each variety performs.
🌸 Garden Dahlias
These are the dahlias that shine in the garden. Their blooms are beautiful on the plant, but we've found they don't always love the harvesting and handling process — petals may bruise easily, stems may be shorter or bendier, or vase life may be shorter than we'd like. That doesn't make them any less perfect. We simply prefer to enjoy them where they grow.
✂️ Cut Flower Dahlias
These are the dahlias we're harvesting daily for bouquets. They're workhorses - tough, sturdy, and hold up to rough handling. Here's what we look for:
Sturdy stems — No bobbleheads or bendy necks. The bloom needs to stand up straight in a vase.
Long stems — We harvest into 5-gallon buckets, which means we need 18–24" stems. Most of our cut flower varieties grow 4–6 feet tall. (Some of the Garden Dahlias simply don’t grow tall enough to be a reliable Cut Flower Dahlia)
Longer vase life — As a general rule, tighter petals = longer vase life. You'll notice a lot of Ball-type dahlias on our list for this reason.
Sturdy petals — Some dahlias are stunning but bruise at the slightest touch. We need blooms that can be harvested, handled, and transported without showing damage.
A note on these categories: These are fluid and flexible, not hard-and-fast rules. Many varieties appear in both lists because they thrive in the garden and perform beautifully as cut flowers. We made this list to help guide our own daily harvest priorities, and we hope they help you make decisions for your own space. Every garden is different, and every grower has their own goals.
